Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)

NAEMT’s Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care. The mission of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care.  PHTLS is developed by NAEMT in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. The Committee provides the medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program.

PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. The course utilizes the internationally recognized PHTLS textbook and covers the following topics:

The Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) course is a comprehensive NAEMT education program for EMS practitioners. In this course you will gain knowledge and practice skills related to pediatric patient assessment and treatment, learn to deliver developmentally appropriate care, and build confidence as an EMS practitioner for the next pediatric emergency call. This course covers topics related to emergency care of sick and injured children, addressing the full spectrum of emergency illnesses, injuries and scenarios that an EMS practitioner might encounter. Pediatric Idaho Medical has unique challenges. While there are fewer pediatric encounters in the field, there are even fewer critical pediatric encounters. It is essential to assess and triage those children who are in need of immediate treatment and transport and those who are stable. Scenarios and treatment plans are a key component of EPC, facilitated by experienced instructors in IMA’s simulated realistic training lab. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a certificate of completion, a wallet card recognizing them as EPC providers for 4 years, and 16 hours CE Credit.

STOP the Bleed

Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding, within five to 10 minutes. Massive bleeding from any cause, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR, the public must learn proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use their hands, dressings, and tourniquets. This course is based on the curriculum from BleedingControl.org, initiative of the American College of Surgeons, to teach anyone the various ways to control bleeding. After course completion, the student will have the skills and confidence to control bleeding including how to properly apply a tourniquet.

Intended for construction workers, arborists, mechanical,  teachers, police officers, and any individual who wants to learn more than what is taught in a First Aid class on how to control bleeding.

Fee:  $20

Time:  Approximately 1.5 hours

Certification:  Course completion certificate.

Testing:  No testing required.

If requested, we can teach a group at your facility for a minimum of 6 students and an additional $25 fee per group. Visit our Group Classes here for further information.
