If you asked anyone what career you could get with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification, likely their first thought would be a paramedic. While this answer makes sense, there are many other career options available with an EMT Certification than those working inside an ambulance. If you’ve considered getting your EMT Certification, read below to check out some of the other amazing careers possible!
Firefighter
As a firefighter, your first priority is to save people from imminent danger. Because of this, all firefighters are required to get an EMT Certification. One of the key skills learned through an EMT Certification is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and it’s easy to see why this is a required skill for any firefighter. You might be called to a car accident or pull someone out of a burning building and be required to give the person CPR. Being a firefighter is an incredibly exhilarating job with many great benefits, but it is not for the weak hearted. It takes extreme bravery to risk your life and go into a burning building to save other human beings. If this sounds appealing and you’re looking for a new opportunity with your EMT Certification, firefighting might be a great career choice for you.
Offshore Paramedic
It might be surprising, but being an offshore paramedic is actually quite different than being a regular paramedic. Simply put, an offshore paramedic is a paramedic working on an oil rig and taking care of any injuries that occur on the job. Working on an oil rig is a very dangerous job and working around heavy machinery all day that can easily result in injury. In fact, oil rigging has a fatality rate that was 7 times the rate of all other United States jobs! As you can imagine, this keeps offshore paramedics busy and provides many opportunities to put skills learned through the EMT Certification to use.
Contract Medic
Similar to an offshore paramedic, a contract medic provides the same services as a paramedic, but provides the opportunity to work in different areas. Contract medics can be hired by cruise companies, sports, music events, and anything else you can think of that might require medical attention. One unique aspect of this job is that you only work for a company for a certain amount of time before moving to the next contract. This is a great opportunity if you want to get some experience in a lot of different industries!
