Welcome to Follow Our Journey, Idaho Medical Academy’s first newsletter! This is where you can keep up on all that’s been happening at IMA, from success stories to announcements to student/staff spotlights. We’ll be starting off with a spotlight for Jessica, our former CPR director, now embarking on a medical mission to Africa! Below is a quick interview about her journey until now.
Where did your journey in the medical field begin?
I started as the Aquatics Director for the City of Nampa teaching CPR and First Aid classes for the City of Nampa employees. Many of my lifeguards were getting their EMT certification so I decided to be trained as well. After doing a few ride-alongs for class, I fell in love with emergency medicine and became a reserve for Ada County Paramedics. After being a reserve for a year, I went to paramedic school. I’m currently on my 12th year as a paramedic with Ada County Paramedics.
What brought you to Idaho Medical Academy?
I really enjoy teaching and using my skills as a paramedic and CPR/First Aid instructor to further the medical knowledge in the valley, so I knew my values aligned perfectly with IMA. Working at as the AHA Director was also an opportunity to add an additional challenge to my repertoire.
What is the next step for your career?
I have a passion for using my skills to help those in need. I also really enjoy traveling around the world. I did a medical mission to Russia in 2019 and loved every minute of it. I wanted to continue doing medical missions, however COVID slowed down that plan. Thankfully things have been improving and I am headed to Africa in 1 week to do another medical mission. I will be helping start a clinic in a refugee camp that has not had medical coverage since COVID. I will also be teaching CPR/First aid to the leaders and teachers in the communities so they can continue providing care when our team leaves. I am excited to use the skills I learned at IMA to continue my care to those in dire need.
How has your experience at IMA prepared you for the future?
Being the AHA director has helped hone my skills in an administrative role. I think this will help make me a well-rounded individual with both hands-on medical skills but also skills to manage programs and individuals who can in turn provide excellent care.
What advice would you have for someone just starting out in your field?
Push yourself to be better everyday. Do not settle for mediocrity and never become stagnant in your goals. Starting in the EMS field can be very intimidating. Find a mentor who can help you through the process. And lastly, know that you make a difference in people’s lives. If you don’t feel like you are making a difference, find a way to change that.
Special thanks to IMA and its Staff!
Found below are some pictures of Jessica’s mission experience. Thanks to IMA, an abundance of medical supplies were donated to support her efforts and those of the mission. Idaho Medical Academy strives to support locally and globally wherever possible. With amazing individuals like Jessica, we can expand our care across borders and help those in need!
